Your Right and Duty to Vote

Author: Lance Winslow

We are told in America that we should all participate in our government and vote. Recently we saw in Iraq they had a bigger voter turn out than we did in America. And they risked their lives to do it too. In a think tank conversation discussion the future of American Politics one member when discussing the right and duty of all Americans to vote and be involved in their government said

Why should people get involved in participating in a lie? It's all bull. The government does not listen; they do no longer need the people. Voting is a waste of time, because your intelligent vote is cancelled out by a TV watching cranial capacity lacking turned off individual who has surrendered their mind to the nightly news.

This is a very heavy statement and many cynics do think like this, even very intelligent ones so something needs to be done to re-align folks to have trust in their government and the voting process. Some believe that the mass media hysteria creates a mob mentality and that the masses are a mob.

Further they believe that this so-called mob should not run the government, that they cannot be trusted. Perhaps this is why we have a Republic. Some political science theorists believe that pure democracies do not work, (they turn socialist, which leads to disaster) because people keep voting for free services from the government rather than being empowered to create opportunity and get those things for themselves and their families.

Indeed we must observe that as great as we are there is a growing mistrust in our government, the voting process, the lobbyists, ethics of politicians and the entire system as a whole. It would behoove America and her government to consider this in 2006.
