Vasectomy: Who Is It For?

Author: Jason Montag

Getting a vasectomy is a personal choice that a man and his spouse make. That being said there are no hard and fast rules for who should and should not get one since it is the mans body and nobody else can make the decision for him. Even if a man wants to take his spouse out of the loop that is his decision. There are a few guidelines to consider following if you are planning on looking into a vasectomy. Again, I would like to stress that this is not a list of requirements as there are no minimum ages or any other prerequisites, as long as the man is above the age of 18 years old.

A good vasectomy candidate is considered on that is 25 years old or more. This is a permanent procedure, though reversal can be done in many cases, and by this age the man is likely to have started a family if he wants and he is also an age that is relatively mature and capable of making this important of a decision. If the man is 25 years old and he and his spouse decide that they are either never going to want children or have created their family and want no more, he is good for a vasectomy.

The couple should be sure that no other birth control is going to accomplish what they want or expect. It is recommended that a vasectomy is not the first line of birth control defense. Couples should try a number of options before opting for the vasectomy because if you do not like one of the other types you can cease using it but a vasectomy is not so easy to take away as it is considered to be permanent.

Some men should have a vasectomy when they are scared of having a child for fear of passing on negative genetic traits or disabilities. The one thing that experts agree on is that a vasectomy should not be gotten because of financial reasons as things can change quickly and if the couple then wants a child because they can afford it they will be unable to do so.

A vasectomy is a big decision that should be made over a span of time and after considerable research, trial times using other birth control methods and with a spouse. Do not go through with a vasectomy with any intentions of reversing it because there are no guarantees the reversal will work. Make sure you are in it for the long haul.
