Grand Canyon or Tombstone

Author: Lenore Chapman

Do you have time for vacation and can't decide where to go. Well, let me tell you, I have been to The Grand Canyon and Tombstone. We flew from Georgia to Arizonia, rented a car and off we went. Our first day was in Tucson, we relaxed and spent time with the kids and made our plans. We decided the next day my husband and his son would do a skydive and then off to The Grand Canyon. It was really odd to leave Tucson where it was hot and sunny and run into snow in the mountains. Of course we had to stop and have a snowball fight before we went any further. By this time we were all cold. Who would think that Arizonia would have cold spots in that state. I was smart, I packed sweats but at the time I was in shorts and t-shirt. We were all glad when we decided it was time to get a motel room for the night. Time to relax, have a couple drinks and warm up. The next day, off to the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is a big hole in the ground but the sight is breath taking. The rock formation is amazing and the colors in the layers. Wow! They have areas that you can drive around and stop to look at a different section of the canyon. Unbelievable. You could fly over the canyon if you so disired. At one point, there is a path you can walk down and spend time down there or spend the night. Not me. I don't do anymore walking then I have to. I figured, it is easy to walk down hill but coming up would be a killer for me. The sight from the street was just as good.

We left there after a couple hours and headed to Tombstone. Man what a town. I loved it and want to go back. First we visited the Boot Hill Graveyard. It was very interesting. Very nice and well kept. To see the names of the famous gun fighters there was neat. There were some grave markers that had different sayings on them, like Lester Moore, "Here lies Lester Moore, four slugs from a 44, no Les no more", and another one, Frank Bowles,"AS YOU PASS BY, REMEMBER THAT, AS YOU ARE, SO ONCE WAS I, AND AS I AM, YOU WILL SOON BE, REMEMBER ME" I bought a book with the history of the graveyard and it is very interesting to read. The actually list how the people died. And not all are from gunshots.

We visited the old courthouse. Very interesting from the show cases upstairs, to the old court room to the gallow out back. Then there is Big Nose Kate's Saloon. You have got to visit that place. The place has a great atmosphere, I didn't want to leave. They say there is a ghost there but I didn't see him. Others claim to see him. It is suppose to be Swamper, an old miner. This is a bar where Clanton, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday was know to drink at.

You have got to check out the Bird Cage Theatre. What a place. The Bird Cage got it's name after the thirteen little rooms that hang from the ceiling where ladies of the night took their men. For twenty dollars you got a bottle of whiskey and a good time for the night, with a lady of the night. Downstairs was very interesting. They had some old furniture and piano's on display and some very old but interesting things of the past. But the most interesting was the little bar and the poker table. It was still sitting there after all this time with the cards, and chips on it. They said that poker game lasted eight years and four months. Wow, what a game.

After leaving there, we headed to the OK Corral. That place was neat. They had a little skit they do about the fight and shooting. Cute but I wanted to see other things. They have little rooms set up that the prostitutes used. Big enough for a bed and wash stand. Still had the old used quilts on them. Seems like they had a lot of them back in those days. There is so much to take in there, that I can go on and on for days.

I enjoyed my trip there and plan to make another trip to the old west in February of 2007. And yes Tombstone in on the list of to do's. So if you are into history, take a trip to Tombstone. Oh yes, the movie Tombstone, watch it, you will see some of the places I was talking about.
