Overcoming a Family History of Ovarian Cancer

Author: Lance Winslow

Ovarian cancer is serious and it runs in certain families. If you eat right, do all the right things, you might still be at risk simply because of your genes. Of course you can significantly reduce the risk of all types of cancer, by staying healthy, eating right, watching your weight and having a personal strategy. If ovarian cancer runs in your family you are automatically in a high-risk category and it pays to pay even more special attention.

For those women who have family histories of ovarian cancer it would be recommended to get some genetic counseling on the issue to see if you have one of the two gene mutations which can cause ovarian cancer. If your family has the negative history and you find out your do not have the gene mutation, this is very good news indeed; both for you and it means that your children stand a better chance as well.

If you do have the gene mutations it is not the end of the world, but it does mean you must pay more attention and get paps tests periodically and develop a more aggressive strategy in your diet and consider other options as well such a contraceptive use and other medical remedies to reduce risk. Your doctor can tell you more and it also behooves you of researching these things yourself and thinking on it.
